Glossary of Terms

Below are some terms that will be used throughout our BackJack documentation. If you have questions regarding any of these terms, feel free to contact us
.

Full Backup

If you are used to using conventional backup methods (such as tape drives), this term will be familiar to you. Typically, a full backup simply means backing up ALL of your critical files in one session. With BackJack, you will usually perform a full backup only once for any given data set.

Incremental Backup

An incremental backup is considered to be a partial backup because it only backs up those files that have changed since your last full backup. Once you have done a full backup using BackJack, your subsequent backups of the same backup sets will be considered incremental. It takes a lot less time to perform incremental backups on a daily basis.

Manual Backup

Users may want to perform a manual backup instead of having regularly scheduled (automatic) backups. This simply means that you can go into BackJack at any time and execute a backup session immediately.

Encryption

The purpose of encryption is to protect your critical files from being accessed by others as they travels via the Internet. It is a process whereby data is transformed to appear meaningless to any viewer. Only the owner of the encryption/ decryption key can restore the data to a readable form. BackJack uses the most sophisticated 128 bit encryption technology available (CAST 128).

Compression

Before your files are sent to our secure servers, they are automatically compressed. Compression is done for two reasons - one is to reduce the transmission time over a network and the second is to reduce storage size (which benefits you in the end).
